Joene Graven Sussex LCSW

Joene is originally from Oregon and completed her undergraduate work at the University of Oregon where she majored in pre-law. At an interim job in the City County Jail in Eugene she was exposed to the horrors of domestic violence as she met and got to know several women accused of murdering abusive husbands which (fortunately!) changed the direction of her professional life. She moved to Hawai’i and earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Hawai’i Manoa. She worked for a number of years in a law firm with sole a practice concentration of assisting survivors of domestic violence. She was a victim advocate, hotline supervisor and was in the criminal and civil courts daily with survivors seeking injunctions, divorce and/or custody and visitation orders. While at this agency she had the opportunity to work with Dr. Edward Kubany who was doing seminal research on PTSD and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault which has had an ongoing impact on her practice focus. After moving to Florida in 2005 she worked briefly at a domestic violence agency in Pasco County and began working with TCHS in October of that year. With this agency she has had several positions including coordinator of an outpatient program, worked as a counselor assisting parents who had children sheltered through the DCF system with the goal of reunification of families in a healthy environment. She was tasked with developing the Integrated Behavioral Health program which is a partnership between TCHS and Central Florida Health Care with the understanding that the mind body and spirit must be addressed concurrently to achieve health and healing.. She is trained in many trauma treatment modalities including Trauma Release Exercises, Accelerated Resolution Therapy and was part of the original training classes in this incredible and effective intervention. She currently works at The Meadowbrook Centre and in assisted living facilities. Her focus and passion remains healing trauma.
